The Economist of Cosines
The Economist of Cosines is a ribald poetic form originally devised by the goblin Mulmon Calxdisreputes. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is divided into five quintains and two to three tercets. A form of parallelism is common throughout the poem, in that certain lines have similar grammatical structures.
- The first part is intended to make an assertion. Certain lines present different views of the same subject. It has lines with three feet with a syllable weight pattern of long-long (quantitative spondaic trimeter). The rhyme scheme repeating in each stanza is aabbb. As a rule throughout the poem, the end rhymes don't generally match perfectly.
- The second part is intended to invert the previous assertion. The third line of each tercet presents a different view of the subject of the first line. It has lines with five feet with a syllable weight pattern of long-long (quantitative spondaic pentameter). The ending of each line of this part shares the same rhyme.
