The Cashew-apple of Hemp-seeds is a poetic riddle intended to express grief over the future, originating in The Inefficient Evils. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is a single octet. Use of alliteration and juxtaposition is characteristic of the form. The eighth line of the octet has the same grammatical structure as the third line. The eighth line of the octet must expand the idea of the sixth line.
