The Red-flash-opal Picture-jasper is a poetic riddle concerning the hunt, originating in The Freeman of Supplying. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is a single tercet. Use of internal rhyme, assonance and simile is characteristic of the form. Each line has seven syllables. The third line of the tercet is required to maintain the phrasing of the second line. The first line is intended to describe the subject of the poem. The second line is intended to develop the previous idea. The third line is intended to make an apology. It must make use of epenthesis. The rhyme scheme of the poem is ABB.
