The Jammy Stamen
The Jammy Stamen is a form of music used for entertainment originating in The Totem of Raising. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. A chanter recites any composition of The Suicide of Cemeteries while the music is played on a uad and a oypo. The music is melody and rhythm without harmony. The entire performance should feel mysterious and is very slow, and it is to be moderately soft. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to play rapid runs.
- The chanter always does the main melody.
- The uad always does the main melody.
- The oypo always provides the rhythm.
- The Jammy Stamen has a well-defined multi-passage structure: an introduction, a lengthy theme, an exposition of the theme and a lengthy recapitulation of the theme.
- In the introduction, the chanter's voice ranges from the middle register to the high register. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage.
- In the theme, the chanter's voice ranges from the low register to the middle register. This passage features only melodic tones and intervals. The passage should be composed and performed using grace notes and syllabic phrasing.
- In the exposition, the chanter's voice ranges from the low register to the middle register. This passage is richly layered with full chords making use of the available range. The passage should be composed and performed using grace notes.
- In the recapitulation, the chanter's voice stays in the high register. This passage typically has some sparse chords. The passage should be composed and performed using grace notes.
