The Lyrical Bouquet
The Lyrical Bouquet is a form of music used for entertainment originating in The Inclusion of Bans. The form guides musicians during improvised performances. The music is played on a sarthin, a sorot and a ethra. The musical voices join in melody and counterpoint, harmony and rhythm. The entire performance is very fast, and it is to be loud. The melody and counterpoint both have mid-length phrases throughout the form. Pitches are densely packed in clusters as music moves from chord to chord. The music repeats for as long as necessary. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, performers are to use mordents.
- The sarthin always does the main melody and should build as the performance proceeds.
- The sorot always should feel furious.
- The ethra always should perform sweetly.
- The Lyrical Bouquet has a well-defined multi-passage structure: a theme and a series of variations on the theme, a lengthy bridge-passage, a finale and a coda.
- The theme is voiced by the melody of the sarthin, the counterpoint of the ethra and the rhythm of the sorot. The sarthin covers its entire range from the strident low register to the raucous high register and the ethra stays in the watery low register.
- The series of variations is voiced by the melody of the sarthin and the harmony of the ethra. The sarthin stays in the raucous high register and the ethra stays in the fragile high register.
- The bridge-passage is voiced by the melody of the sarthin, the rhythm of the sorot and the rhythm of the ethra. The sarthin stays in the strident low register and the ethra stays in the watery low register.
- The finale is voiced by the melody of the sarthin and the melody of the ethra. The sarthin stays in the strident low register and the ethra stays in the fragile high register. The passage should be performed using frequent modulation.
- The coda is voiced by the melody of the sarthin, the rhythm of the sorot and the rhythm of the ethra. The sarthin covers its entire range from the strident low register to the raucous high register and the ethra stays in the fragile high register.
